BAKER -- The friends of Mrs. Harriet Corbiere Baker, widow of the late T. S. Baker, will be pained to learn she died in Chicago, Dec. 11th, 1887 of pleurisy, after an illness of one week. She was in her 66th year. She ws a sister of the late W. A. Corbiere and Mrs. W. B. Booth and F. A. Corbiere of Binghamton, NY, besides two brothers, Chas. F. Corbiere and Theo. K. Corbiere of Cal. She leaves a large circle of relative and friends to mourn her loss. One son T. S. Baker of Denver, Col., and threedaughters, Mrs. Dr. F. E. Sherman of Chicago, Mrs. O. H. Wood of Kansas City, and Mrs. J. Sims of Kansas City, besides four grandchildren. Mrs. Baker was a native of Bennington; her youthful days were spent here. She was married and was united with the Baptist Church when quite young and was a consistent Christian. She died with the hope of a bright future, with a smile on her countenance, which is a great consolation to her dear children who stood around her dying bed, gave her every attendance thatnone but loving ones can give, to a kind and loving mother. BALDWIN -- Died, A sister of Mrs. S. Munra, died in Chicago March 7, 1890. The Erie, Pa., Gazette of March 9th, in referring to the death says: Mrs. Baldwin was the youngest daughter of the late Judge Sterrett, the venerable founder of the Gazette. While in Erie a week ago she contracted a cold that resulted in pneumonia. Judge Sterrett s house was one of the most hospitable of the old time in Erie. His large family of young ladies and gentlemen attracted to their home a brilliant circle of distinguished guests,and the Sterrett homestead was famous for his cordial entertainment. Mrs. Baldwin is remembered with affection by all those who formed that circle in those days, and the news of her death was received with general sympathy and regret. Besides Mrs. Baldwin there survives a son and a daughter, both widely known in Erie by reason of their long residence here prior to their removal to Chicago. Her surviving sisters are Mrs. Truendell, of Erie; Mrs. Black, of Union City; and Mrs. Munra, of Oregon. One brother, JohnSterrett, is still living in Erie. BALLINGALL, PATRICK, ESQ. -- Chicago, Nov. 21, ae. 47. Mr. B. was a native of Scotland, and was born in the town of Ayr, in the year 1811, a place rendered famous for being the birthplace of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. He came to Chicago in 1834, and soon after commenced the study of law in the offices of Messrs. Spring & Goodrich. In 1839 he was appointed clerk of the Circuit Court of Du Page Co. In 1842 he resigned, and opened a law office in Chicago. In 1848 he was elected a member of the conventionof the state to form a new constitution. In 1852 he was elected district attorney, and in 1854 city attorney. This is the last surviving member of the family of the late Jabez Barber, of Chicago, who, with his wife and daughter, perished in the Collins steamer Pacific in 1856. At the time of his death his property was estimated at about $250,000, and has increased in value to $400,000. After leaving sensible provisions for the family during the settlement of the will, and $250 per annum to his four sisters in England during their lives; also to his wife’s sister, MatildaWilde, of Chicago, $1,000; to the American and Foreign Missionary Society, $1,000; to the American Home Missionary Society, $1,000; to the American Bible Society, $1,000; to the Third Presbyterian Church, Chicago, $3,000 – the balance of the property was left for the benefit of the family; and, as the child whose death is recorded above was the only surviving member, she was the sole heir. BATCHELLER, EZRA - The funeral of Ezra Batcheller, who died at Grand Haven, Mich., Monday, occurs at that city this forenoon at 10 o'clock and remains will be taken to Lyons, Iowa, for interment. Mr. Batcheller came to Chicago in 1837 from Paxton, Mass. where he was born Nov. 10, 1820. Arriving in Chicago he entered the employ of Philo Carpenter, who at that primative day was doing business where the lumber market now stands. Mr. Batcheller saw in young Chicago's rapid growth financial gain, and investedin real estate, entering the firm of Holden & Batcheller. In 1865 he removed to Lyons, Iowa, where he entered the real estate business and found a wife. Mr. Batcheller was until ten years ago a prominent and respected citizen of Lyons, being major of the city at one time. In 1880 he returned to Chicago and again entered the real estate business in this city. By dint of hard work he accumulated a large estate. Two years ago his health began to fail him, and last November he went to Grand Haven, Michigan, tovisit a sister and try and regain his wanted health. Relief did not come, however, and during the last nine months he failed rapidly, a combination of diseases hastening his end. One of the old settlers, his death will cause many reminiscences of the past among many of those who ar left and whom in his delightful social way Mr. Batcheller was accustomed to entertain. The deceased leaves a daughter, Mrs. J.F. Baker, Clinton, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Shippey, Grand Haven, Michigan; and two brothers, Webster Batchellerof Chicago, and Jenison Batcheller, Glens Falls, New York. BAUER, Walter J. -- BARE MUTILATING, FATAL OPERATION ON BRIDEGROOM
Chicago - Walter J. Bauer, bridegroom of three weeks was bound and gagged today and subjected to a mutilating operation that was performed in a parked car with a pen knife without benefit of anesthetic. He died shortly thereafter in a hospital. Police suspect a former suitor of Bauer's bride. They said the operation was such as would only be incited by the bitterest jealously or hatred. Bauer lived long enough after the tortuous ordeal to tell hospital attendants of his suspicion that a disappointed loverchose this merciless revenge when he found another had been successful in wooing the hand of the pretty Kirksville, MO., hospital nurse who became Mrs. Bauer three weeks ago. CHICAGO Aug 15 - Leroy Bell, six years of age, died of hydrophobia a last night after eleven hours of agony The boy was attacked July 11 by a large dog, which threw him to the ground and tore his face and throat in a savage manner. The wounds however, healed rapidily and nothing more was thought of the matter until three days ago, when the boy complained of feeling ill. In spite of medical aid he grew rapidly worse, suffering from convulsions so violent that it required the strength of several men to hold himin his bed. The Pasteur institute had declined to treat the boy unless it was proven that the dog was mad, but as the dog could not be found nothing beyond cauterization was used to prevent hydrophobia. BIEDERMAN --- CHICAGO CONSTABLE KILLED.
Said to Have Been Lured Into Saloon for Purpose of Murder. Chicago, Dec. 3. Julius F. Biederman. a constable, was shot and killed this afternoon while attempting to remove a slot machine from a saloon kept by Joseph Brunner at Western avenue and James street. Biederman went to the saloon, saying that he had authority from Justice Hurley to remove the machine, and was dragging it from the place, when he was attacked by three men, two of whom are said to have worn constable's stars. Several shots were fired, Biedermanbeing the first to use his weapon. The police have arrested three men whom they accuse of being those who attacked Biederman, but decline to give their names. It is claimed by some of Biederman's friends that he was lured to the place for the purpose of taking his life, but no evidence of such a conspiracy has been disclosed. BISSEL -- A sleeping car on the Harlem extension was burned last night and Mr. Bissel, proprietory of the Sherman house, Chicago, and his son perished in the flames. Ten other passengers are reported as having been badly burned. The accident was caused by the car running off of a broken rail and the upsetting of the car, which then took fire. Taught in Shelbyville, Tenn., Greensborough, Ala., and Cumberland, Md.; professor of Latin and Greek at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, 1854-6. He read law and was admitted to the bar in Tennessee, but in 1853 removed to Iowa, locating first at Marietta, afterwards at Marshalltown. He was one of the original trustees of the town; trusteeof Iowa College; president of the bar association of the eleventh judicial district; delegate to the National Union convention at Philadelphia, 1866, and to the National Democratic convention in New York, 1868; president of the Iowa Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; counsel for the Iowa Central Railroad; director of the First National and president of the Farmers' National Banks. BOSSE - Sister Mary Victorie (nee Celina) Bosse, Nov. 3, at Mercy Hospital, 26th Street and Prairie Avenue, aged 89 years. She was the last of the first Sisters of Mercy who opened Mercy Hospital in 1850; she has been a religious seventy-one years and four months; she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Bergeron and Mrs. Eulalia Conney Martin, and their families. She was the aunt of Rev. Joseph Hudson, Rev. Q. H. Bosse, S. J., and the late Rev. A. L. Bergeron; aunt of Drs. Victorian Eugene and Joseph C. Bergeron, Sister Esperance Hudson, O.S.D.; Sister Mary Agnes Savoie, Order of St. Joseph, and Sisters Mary Callista and Mary Fidelia Conney, Order of Mercy, St. Xavier Academy; also of the children of her deceased brothers, Ignace and Joseph, and of her sisters, Aglice Savole and Adelie Hudson.
