What to wear on engagement photo shoots is one of the commonly asked questions I hear from newly engaged couples. This is a serious question you need to consider, because you will want to look back on these images with joy, rather than thinking, why did I wear that! The most important thing to remember about your engagement shoot is, it should be unique to you.

Why have an Engagement Photo shoot?

Engagement photo shoots are a great way of working with your photographer before the wedding day, it may even be the first time you and your fiancè have professional images taken together. You will find that it is an ice breaker for you all, it will really help you to build your trust in the photographer and get used to being in front of the lens with no pressure. This in my opinion, makes a massive difference on your wedding day, all the formalities have already been done and you can just crack on and enjoy your day knowing what to expect from your photographer.

Engagement photos can be used in your invites, save the date cards, photo albums, and guest signing book, I have even had them used as table pieces. This will bring a whole other meaning to the engagement session and makes them even more special.

When Planning what clothes to wear I would keep it simple and comfortable, it is all about who you are and your personalities, if you pick clothing that you wouldn’t normally wear, or is just not you, this will definitely show in the photos.

Think about the time of year and what compliments that season, especially if your engagement shoot is outdoors, if its Autumn or winter, bring warm coats or think about wellies if you are going to woodland, nothing worse that having some nice boots only to find the trails are muddy. the same goes for summer shoots, wearing big coats or jumper may make you sweat, causing sweat marks on clothing or shiny foreheads.

You will want to coordinate with each other, think about complimentary colours, and styles based on the location, If it is in the grounds of a stately home and you are wearing more formal attire, this will look great but if it is in the local park or woods it will not translate as well.

Dogs or are a great way to help you feel natural in front of the camera, I actively encourage couples to bring their dogs to woodland sessions, it is part of who you are. This helps you to feel relaxed, taking your mind off the camera and giving you something to focus on, actually helps get the natural real emotions of the couple.

So you know where you are having your engagement shoot, and the style that will suit the location, I would still recommend bringing at least one outfit change just to mix it up a bit, having variety or a different look makes for great versatility in your engagement shoot, not only that but if the weather turns you may need a rain jacket or umbrella.

This one is for the ladies - we will be getting some amazing shots of your engagement ring ? So make sure that the sparkles are popping and your nails are done, this is a great excuse to have a little makeover right!

Do’s

  • Choose complimenting clothes styles and colours, if you are up a mountain (which btw I would love to do) then you will need the appropriate clothing. If you are in woodland then neutral solid colours may be preferable, likewise if you are in a city, you may want to be a bit more bold and stylish? As long as you are comfortable then that is all that really matters.

  • Bring props, this can be anything from your pets, instruments, sports, whichever suits you, this can add variety to your shoot which will make it unique.

  • Get professional hair and makeup done, could be a great opportunity to have your hair or makeup trial on the same day?

  • Get some new clothes, shoes as long as they are comfortable and suit the vibe.

Don’ts

  • Wear exactly matching outfits.

  • Anything with big patterns, logos, polka dots, stripes, or animal prints.

  • Fluorescent clothing, shirts in particular or very bright colours - gives a colour cast to skin.

  • T-shirts or old trainers, they may be your favourite but they will not look the best in photos.

  • Empty pockets guys, nothing worse than having a phone or a big set of keys showing in your jeans.

If you have chosen an outside location, the time I find works best is around late afternoon when the sun is low, the light is more flattering at this time of day, avoiding harsh shadows and just looks the best if you get a good sunset. Also the blue hour just after sunset can have great opportunities if the sky is lit up or has a nice warming glow, some really nice shots can be produced. So allow plenty of time after your shoot as it may just be worth hanging around.

  • Have a great time, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, this will come across in the pictures if you are in a good mood, it shows!

  • Put the trust in your photographer, you will be amazed by the results, especially if this is your first time in front of the camera. It may feel a bit strange but trust me your images will look awesome.

  • You can never go wrong with neutrals! Play it safe with solid neutral colours.

Wear a darker, slightly more muted version instead! My favorite go-to colors? Deep wine reds, mustard yellows, burnt or rust orange, soft dusky pink, any shade of gray, warm browns, olive greens, or deep/soft blues. Other neutrals are also great!

Working with the same photographer for both your engagement session and your wedding, you'll become more familiar with your photographer's style, personality, and shooting preferences. This can lead to a way more relaxed and comfortable experience, leading to incredible images.

It is entirely up to you, but most of my couples choose to wear two outfits at their engagement session. One “us on a cute, casual date” outfit and one more formal outfit.

Should you wear your hair up or down for engagement photos? ›

The ambiance and vibe of the location can guide your decision on whether to wear your hair up or down. For instance, an updo looks stunning for a formal, elegant shoot, while loose waves or braids may be perfect for a more relaxed and natural setting.

What shoes to wear for engagement photos? ›

Engagement sessions require quite a bit of walking so make sure you feel comfortable in your shoes. Ladies, if you choose to wear heels, bring a pair of flats to change into while moving from one location to another.

How do you look thinner in engagement photos? ›

Try your best to keep your body slightly turned, this will help you look slimmer than if you were standing straight on facing the camera. Tilt your shoulders toward the photographer, slightly dropped down and keep your hips at an angle.

How many outfits should I have for engagement photos? ›

I always recommend bringing one casual and one fancy outfit for engagement photos, that way you have some variety! But too many outfits can cut into your photo taking time and create a gallery that's all over the place. So for an hour session, I recommend sticking to two different outfits.

Should I wear makeup for engagement photos? ›

At the end of the day, it's about what makes you feel most comfortable. If you're happy doing your own hair and makeup, or even not wearing any makeup at all, it's about what you need. Make the choice based on what will make you feel most comfortable and confident with your engagement photographer in New York.

What should you not do in engagement photos? ›

If you are wearing fancy shoes or you will be getting dirty/wet, bring a change of clothes and shoes to wear before and after. If you don't feel comfortable in tight-fitting clothes, avoid them. Choosing patterns and colors that don't fight with what is around you, is important.

How many photos should a wedding photographer give you? ›

Broadly speaking, wedding photographers typically deliver 50-100 photos for every hour of coverage they provide.

How long before wedding should you take engagement pictures? ›

When should you take engagement photos? If you're looking to use your images for save-the-dates, the traditional time to take them is 6-8 months before your wedding. However, that doesn't mean you can't take them earlier or later!

How long is a typical engagement photo shoot? ›

Many couples ask us… 'what do you mean by the engagement shoot, we're already engaged?!?… This is just something that helps you prepare for your wedding day… and it doesn't last long (about 45min-an hour). Basically this photo shoot is about practicing, chatting, getting to know your wedding photographer.

What should I bring to my engagement photos? ›

Here are the 10 things that I have consistently noticed help engagement photo sessions be the best they can be.
  • A plan.
  • Neutral, coordinating clothing.
  • Two to three outfit changes - each!
  • Extra clothing to keep you warm/cool if your photographed outfits won't cut it.
  • A pretty blanket to sit on.

Should I wear black for engagement photos? ›

Should you wear lipstick for engagement photos? ›

Wear a Nude Lip

If you don't consider yourself a regular lipstick wearer, swiping on a light pigment (like a nude or pink) can make a big difference in your engagement photos. Even if the tone is just a smidge different from your bare lips, it will keep them from getting washed out from the brightness of the flash.

What colour should you wear to an engagement party? ›

As an engagement party guest, the rule of thumb is to step away from wearing white, as that's probably what the bride-to-be will wear – and you don't want to take the attention off her! On the other hand, black is totally allowed, and it's a timeless, elegant, flattering, mysterious and sleek choice.
