Have you ever noticed a goat or a cow grazing? There is something common….those two animals keep chewing all the time. Seems like I have something in common with them :) Oh yes, I've told you several times about how I like to munch something every now and then. Can you believe it when I say that I start raiding my kitchen cupboards for some snacks after 10 mins of having BF or lunch? These days I find it really hard to resist the temptations especially when my FB newsfeed is always updated with some beautiful food snaps. Ok leave the internet and switch on the TV, almost every other channel is loaded with cookery shows, doesn't look good, what about reading something and there again you can see some food pics, sigh! It feels like the Universe is conspiring for me to give into the temptation ;)

Usually I end up with some junk food for munching, but after some time I feel guilty and forcefully eat some supposed-to-be health bars and what not! I only wish that these health bars suppressed my munching temptation… but the effect is more depressing. I don't like the taste of all this healthy crap and that's when I realised how I miss those unhealthy flavoured junk food and stuff myself with the double the amount of junk. So much for trying to eat healthy.

When I posted this eggless cinnamon recipe here, I never ever thought it would be one of the most popular recipes in the site. Because its a general tendency that we associate healthy food with awful taste, yep – I also do that. But that recipe was a revelation to me that healthy stuff can be tasty too and yes I'm sure there are other recipes also of the same category. This is one such recipe. Though the name of this cookie is Oatmeal & Raisin & Dates cookie, I re-christened it as Healthy Cookie. Yep, if you go through the ingredients, you'll know it. I've customised the original recipe to make a healthier version.

Another thing I liked about the recipe is that, its quite filling. Also its a good way to incorporate oats in your diet. The cookie has a soft cakey texture with a slightly crusted top.

So shall we go ahead and bake some healthy cookies?

  1. Hi Maria.. I m new yo ur blog and love ur recipes. Just wanna knw which oats u used in this recipe? There are so many varieties of oats we get here..!!!! Dont know which one to use where!!! I have old fashioned rolled oats with me. Can I just roughly grind and use them in ur recipe as I dont like the texture of whole oats. Also it looks in ur photos that u didnt used whole oats..!

    • Hi Garima,

Thank you :) Sorry for the delayed reply.

I’ve used regular quick cooking oats in this recipe. I normally buy that one, so I tend to use that for all the oats recipes.

Hope you get to try the cookies soon and like them too.

      Cheers

but this recipe din turn out as expected… d cookies had wheat’s smell n were wet inside…..i couldn bake dem further as d top was gettin burnt…
    pls help

    • Hi Sachin,

Sorry to hear that the cookies didnt turn out well :(
The wheat smell was there because it wasnt fully cooked.
May be you can try reducing the temp a bit next time.. also try making smaller size cookies. Make sure the dough is mixed well.

I do hope it comes out perfect next time..

      Happy baking :)

      Cheers

  9. Hey Maria,

I have been a silent reader of your site, have tried out some recipes and they all came out good.

I am planning to try this, but is it a must to use baking sheet? Can’t I place the cookies directly on the baking tray? Also for cooling, wire rack is a must?

Will sure let you know how it goes.

    • Hi UmmSumayya,

Thank you for your feedback :) You can keep on the baking tray, but its beter to line it with some parchment paper and place the cookies on that.

Also, you can cool the cookies on any flat surface, wire rack isnt necessary. Sorry for the delayed rep :(

Hope you get to try these cookies soon.

      Cheers

  10. This came out really well. Am going to try substituting the brown sugar with jaggery. Also I made it with apricots, dates and added walnuts. Am guessing you can use anything available in your pantry- as long as you keep the end consistency the same. Thanks.

    • Thanks Rashmi! Yep, its a pretty compromising recipe. I’ve made many variations from the original one & still it comes out perfect :)

Hope jaggery version also works out well!

      Cheers
      Maria

  13. Maria kutti..hope u re doing fine..I was on the look out for some healthy recipes to prepare for my inlaws..and saw this..if i don’t have dates? what should isubstituteit with? 1 cup of raisins and other mixed nuts? do you think that will work…take care and have done the survey.. :)

    • Hello kutti :)

I’m doing fine dear… Hope you are doing good. I havent tried it without dates, however google says you can use dried figs or dried raisins instead of dried dates. So I guess that should work. May be adjust the sugar qty also accordingly.

Hope the cookie comes out well… Happy baking dear…

      Take care
      Maria

  14. Hi Maria ,

I’m Lisa. I’m a frequent visitor of your site and just love all your recipes. Especially all the Kerala Christianrecipes as I’mfrom Pala, Kottayam. Though I was cominghere and using your recipes for couple of years, I was soooo lazy to say some good words. Now, no more excuses. Today I’m here to apologize for the delay and to Thank you for all the great recipes.

Today I tried the Oatmeal cookies and they were perfect. I dint have Chocolate chips and Dates. I used walnuts and Cashewnuts to make it to a cup with the raisins. As the chocolate chips were so tempting and I dint have any, I added little bit of Nutella to get the chocolate flavor

Also, last week I tried the chicken buns and they were superb. My Husband liked it so much and I made a second batch on the second day. I tried it with cheese filling and they were good too.

I have tried lot other recipes from your site. All of them were great. Expecting more recipes. Mean time I will continue exploring your site. Thank you again !!!

    • Hi Lisa,

Thanks a ton for your lovely comment! Btw, please dont apologize n all… As I’ve written in my last post, there is a time for everything :)

I’m thrilled to hear that you liked the recipes posted here & try them on a regular basis, thank you! Adding nutella to cookies sounds yum, I should also try it sometime.

Btw, my mom is also from Pala…

      Happy cooking :)

      Cheers
      Maria

You are welcome dear :) Yep, its a great healthy snack. I’m glad your kids liked it. Thanks for the comment.

      Cheers

  18. Hey Maria,

I just wanted to let you know that these cookies turned out to be absolutely lovely!

I have a query though, my dough was sort of crumbly and not quite a dough that stuck together. Do you think i should have kneaded the mixture a bit to get a dough that would be soft and easy to scoop onto the baking sheet? Do let me know where you think I might have gone wrong.

Secondly, yes, i got my SLR and would like to know how i could send you my pictures of the completed dish based on your recipes…

    • Suni dear,

      Thanks a ton :)

About your query, try whisking it a bit longer & see whether it comes together. If that’s not working, add a bit of milk, just enough to bring the dough together. Hope it works.

Btw, as I told you in the mail, I loved the idea of choc dipped cookies :) I’ll try to update the site with your pic soon, will let you know once its done ok….

      Cheers
      Maria
